About Me

My name is Maximillian Mayell

I’m a motivated Holistic Healthcare Practitioner, specialising in client-centred care informed by Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming principles. I was born in Christchurch New Zealand and lived here until the end of high school. I spent some time travelling before settling back down in Christchurch and studied Hypnotherapy and NLP. I've been in an active practice ever since I completed my trainings. I help people make shifts in their patterns of thought and behaviour which allows them to live more fulfilling lives. I found through my own challenging experiences in school growing up how difficult it is to shake beliefs that hold you back without the proper tools and techniques. Hypnotherapy and NLP helped me become the person I am today. Through working with the unconscious mind and how it holds onto beliefs directly. We have a direct path in changing how the body and mind respond to the environment in the present. With this connection to the environment you are in at present. Change lasts, and we end up in an empowered state where we are able to live the life we decide to. It's no small task to delve into the beliefs and behaviours shaping the world you live in. But in my experience, it's always worth the time. If you are interested in making changes to how you respond to the world that last, reach out and get in touch. I strongly believe that a balanced approach to life must include both a mindfulness around positive health, and states of dis-ease. In my time outside of my career, I am usually in motion either practising yoga, karate, climbing, cooking, reading, taking photos, or hiking.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a natural, altered state of consciousness characterized by focused attention, deep relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. It is often described as a trance-like state, where the conscious mind is relaxed, allowing the subconscious mind to become more receptive to suggestions. Hypnosis is commonly used for therapeutic purposes, known as hypnotherapy, but it can also be employed for entertainment or relaxation.

While it’s commonly associated with entertainment and stage performances, where individuals appear to act out behaviours under the "control" of a hypnotist, the therapeutic use of hypnosis is a serious, scientifically recognized technique with various psychological and medical applications.

Hypnosis is neither sleep nor unconsciousness, as the term "trance" might suggest. In fact, a person in a hypnotic state is fully aware of their surroundings and can communicate with the hypnotherapist if needed. However, they experience a deep sense of relaxation and focused attention, which makes them more open to positive suggestions or changes in perception.

The hypnotic state can be described as a continuum, ranging from light to deep trance, and individuals vary in their responsiveness to hypnosis. Some people enter a deep trance quickly, while others may only experience a light trance. The key element is the ability to focus inwardly, away from distractions, which enables the mind to become more receptive to new ideas or healing suggestions that stimulate the imagination and engage the senses..

Neuro Linguistic Programming

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an approach to personal development, communication, and psychotherapy that is based on the premise that our thoughts (neuro), language (linguistic), and behaviours (programming) are interconnected and influence one another. Developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, NLP is a model of human experience that aims to understand how people process information, interact with the world, and how those processes can be altered to achieve specific goals or overcome challenges.

The core idea behind NLP is that by changing the way we think, speak, and act, we can influence our feelings, behaviours, and outcomes in a more positive, effective, and purposeful way. Essentially, NLP teaches people how to reprogram their mental processes to break free from limiting beliefs, enhance their communication, and unlock their full potential.

NLP works by identifying patterns in the way people think, communicate, and behave. These patterns can either serve as obstacles to personal success or be harnessed as powerful tools for change. The process of NLP involves recognizing unhelpful patterns and replacing them with more resourceful, empowering ones.

  • 1. What is NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)?
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, which is a set of techniques and principles aimed at understanding and improving how people think, feel, and behave. It’s based on the idea that our thoughts (neuro), language (linguistic), and behaviors (programming) are interconnected. By changing patterns in these areas, NLP aims to help people achieve personal growth, overcome challenges, and achieve their desired outcomes.
  • 2. How does NLP work?
NLP works by identifying and altering negative or unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. Practitioners use a variety of techniques, such as reframing, anchoring, and visualization, to help individuals replace limiting beliefs with empowering ones. NLP can help you shift your mindset, improve communication, and enhance performance in different aspects of life, from personal relationships to career goals.
  • 3. What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses hypnosis (a relaxed state of focused attention) to help individuals make positive changes in their behaviour, thoughts, and emotions. A hypnotherapist guides a person into a trance-like state, where the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to suggestions, helping with issues such as anxiety, stress, phobias, and unwanted habits.
  • 4. How does Hypnotherapy work?
Hypnotherapy works by accessing the dreaming mind, commonly associated with R.E.M sleep, where deeply rooted thoughts and behaviours are represented by metaphor. During a session, the hypnotherapist uses guided relaxation techniques to induce a trance, where the client becomes highly focused and open to suggestions. These suggestions can help reprogram the subconscious mind to promote healing, change negative behaviours, or reinforce positive habits. Because the mind is open to change while in this state of trance, change can happen seemingly instantly without any conscious effort.
  • 5. What is the difference between NLP and Hypnotherapy?
NLP and hypnotherapy share similarities, as both are used for personal development and to help overcome obstacles. However, they differ in approach: NLP focuses more on changing thought patterns and behaviours through language and other cognitive techniques. It is often more conscious and directive in its application. Hypnotherapy relies on inducing a relaxed, focused state (hypnosis), to work directly with the subconscious mind, making it more focused on deep-rooted emotional or behavioural change.
  • 6. Can NLP and Hypnotherapy be used together?
Yes, NLP and hypnotherapy can complement each other and are often combined in therapeutic settings. The techniques of NLP can help change thought patterns and behaviors on a conscious level, while hypnotherapy can help access the subconscious mind for deeper transformation. Many practitioners combine both approaches for a holistic, effective treatment.
  • 7. What issues can NLP and Hypnotherapy help with?
Both NLP and hypnotherapy are effective for a wide range of issues, including: Stress and anxiety management, Overcoming phobias and fears, Breaking bad habits (like smoking or overeating), Boosting confidence and self-esteem, Improving focus and performance (in work or sports), Resolving emotional blockages, Managing chronic pain, Enhancing personal growth and goal achievement.
  • 8. Is NLP and Hypnotherapy safe, and what is the scope of practice?
Yes, both NLP and hypnotherapy are generally safe when practiced by trained and qualified professionals. However, they are not a substitute for medical treatment or therapy for severe psychological conditions. It’s important to work with a licensed practitioner who is skilled in these modalities to ensure a safe and effective experience. If wanting to work with medical conditions, your licenced medical practitioner must provide written and signed proof. Hypnosis and NLP do not treat or diagnose any conditions.
  • 9. Can anyone be hypnotized?
Most people are able to be hypnotized to some degree, though the level of susceptibility varies from person to person. Some people may enter a deep trance easily, while others may find it harder to achieve the same state. A skilled hypnotherapist can help guide individuals into a trance at a level that is comfortable for them.
  • 10. Do I have to believe in NLP or Hypnotherapy for it to work?
While a belief in the effectiveness of NLP or hypnotherapy can enhance the experience, these therapies often work regardless of a person’s belief system. The key is the willingness to engage with the process and an openness to change. Hypnosis, for example, works best when you are receptive to the suggestions made during a session.
  • 11. How many sessions do I need?
The number of sessions required varies depending on the individual and the issue being addressed. Some people experience significant results after just one or two sessions, while others may need more ongoing sessions for deeper or more complex issues. A typical session lasts between 60-90 minutes.
  • 12. Common Myths About Hypnosis
Despite its proven benefits, hypnosis is often misunderstood. Here are some common myths: Myth 1: "You can be made to do anything under hypnosis." Fact: You cannot be made to do anything against your will or morals while hypnotized. You remain in control and aware of what’s happening. Myth 2: "Hypnosis is a form of mind control." Fact: Hypnosis is not about control; it’s about helping individuals access their subconscious mind to make positive changes. Myth 3: "You will be unconscious during hypnosis." Fact: Hypnosis is not sleep. You remain fully conscious and aware of your surroundings, though deeply relaxed. Myth 4: "Hypnosis is a quick fix for all problems." Fact: Hypnosis can be a powerful tool for making lasting changes, but it may take multiple sessions to achieve significant results, especially with complex or deeply ingrained issues.
  • 13. What can I expect when I'm hypnotised?
Everyone responds to hypnosis and trance differently. Some feel a sense of lightness, or heaviness. Most people feel a profound sense of relaxation. Some people don't necessarily feel anything at all. Which can lead to people saying after the session ends, "I don't think I was hypnotised at all". However hypnosis and trance is experienced, everyone is able to respond to suggestion and see benefit from receiving well delivered suggestions from a trained practitioner.
